Computer Consortium Unveils Chip: An effort by a group of leading computer firms to create a new standard for desktop computer systems took a step forward as MIPS Computer Systems announced the availability of a key computer-on-a-chip, and Microsoft demonstrated a prototype version of a new software operating system. MIPS touted its new RISC (reduced instruction set computing) chip, which will be built by five different semiconductor manufacturers, as the highest performance microprocessor in the world. Beginning next year, it will form the brain inside high-powered computers from Digital Equipment, Compaq and other companies that are members of the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) initiative.
