City to Pay More for Mall Security
The Redondo Beach City Council, responding to increased crime around the Galleria at South Bay, agreed this week to boost its share of the security costs in a revised agreement with the mall.
Police estimate that 20% of the city’s serious crime, which has risen significantly in the first half of this year, takes place in the area surrounding the mall.
Previously, the city had paid a fixed $64,000 for Redondo Beach police officers to patrol outside the Galleria, with the mall paying almost three times that much. Under the new agreement approved Tuesday night, the city will pay half of the security costs, or about $108,000 a year. The money will come from police drug seizure and forfeiture funds.
The mall opened in 1985 with the help of city redevelopment funds and is the eighth-largest shopping center in the county.
