1 Killed, 1 Injured in Gang Shooting at Store
One young man was shot to death and another was wounded Thursday in a “fluke” confrontation between two gangs in the parking lot of a Montgomery Ward store in Panorama City, Los Angeles police said.
One youth died at the scene and the other was in stable condition at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was treated for a gunshot wound in the lower torso, said Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker.
The names and ages of the victims were not released.
The shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. when a fistfight broke out among six young men from two San Fernando Valley gangs who happened to meet outside the department store in the Panorama City Center located at Roscoe and Van Nuys boulevards, Kroeker said. Witnesses told police that the fighting escalated and that at least two handguns were fired, he said.
