Former Champion Haugen to Fight at Country Club
Former two-time world champion Greg Haugen, the only fighter to defeat Hector Camacho, will fight at the 950-seat Country Club in Reseda on Oct. 29.
Haugen (28-4-1) will face Alfonso Perez (18-6) of National City, Calif., in a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout, according to promoter Dan Goossen, president of the Van Nuys-based Ten Goose Boxing Club.
Goossen, who said he has a contract to promote future Haugen fights, said Haugen hopes to get a bout next year against either Camacho or Julio Cesar Chavez, the unbeaten World Boxing Council super lightweight champion.
Haugen, 31, won the International Boxing Federation lightweight title in 1986 but lost it a year later to Vinny Pazienza. Haugen regained the title in 1988 with a 15-round decision over Pazienza.
He lost a 12-round decision in 1989 to Pernell Whitaker but then beat the previously unbeaten Camacho last February in a bout in which Haugen earned $1.2 million. A month later, however, he lost a close decision in a rematch with Camacho.
Perez, 22, was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 5-foot-11, Perez is more than five inches taller than Haugen and he has 13 knockouts in his professional career.
The bout will not be televised.
