Campo
The seizure of 391 pounds of marijuana Thursday by the U.S. Border Patrol officers was the third large bust in San Diego in the last three weeks.
Officers stopped a Volkswagen Jetta at 1:30 p.m. Thursday as it illegally crossed the border east of Campo, Border Patrol spokesman Michael Gregg said. In the trunk of the car, driven by Genaro Medina Ortiz, 23, an undocumented immigrant, was a cache of marijuana with a street value of more than $780,000, the Border Patrol said.
On Sept. 28, Border Patrol officers stopped a car carrying 1,423 pounds of marijuana, and on Sept. 25 intercepted 600 pounds.
Thursday’s seizure was the first of the 1992 fiscal year, which began Tuesday, Gregg said. In fiscal year 1991, smugglers were caught attempting to cross the border into San Diego with 24,700 pounds of marijuana, 683 pounds of cocaine and 655 pounds of methamphetamine, Gregg said.
