PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Penalties Can’t Stop Canyon
Canyon weathered a blizzard of penalty flags Saturday night and defeated Magnolia, 28-8, in a nonleague football game at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.
The Comanches (2-2) were penalized 17 times for 150 yards, including six times for 60 yards during one possession in the third quarter. In all, the teams were penalized 27 times for 236 yards.
Fortunately for the Comanches, they were able to generate 362 yards in total offense, including 189 yards rushing. Tailback Darryl Lawrence led the way with 112 yards rushing in nine carries, including a 31-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Running back Jeff Brunswig scored two touchdowns on runs of seven and 15 yards to give Canyon a 13-0 second-quarter lead, but a last-second 56-yard touchdown pass from Magnolia quarterback Darrell Turner to Steve Anderson cut the lead to 13-8 at halftime.
Canyon took the second half kickoff and drove 60 yards to take a 21-8 lead. The touchdown came on quarterback Brian Jalowiec’s 29-yard pass to Derek Marshall. Jalowiec then added a two-point conversion pass to Damon Harvey.
Magnolia is 1-3.
