FTC Charges Maker of Trash Bags: The Federal Trade Commission has charged the maker of Glad trash bags with failing to provide sufficient scientific proof that the plastic bags will completely decompose within a “reasonably short” period of time. Under a proposed FTC agreement, First Brands of Danbury, Conn., must provide scientific evidence if it claims that the bags are “safe for the environment” and, in certain conditions, would have to say the products are not designed to break down in landfills.
