Boeing to Freeze Hiring Earlier: Because of the effects of recently announced defense program cutbacks on company employment, Boeing Co. of Seattle said it will freeze hiring earlier this year than usual. Its annual year-end hiring freeze had been scheduled to go into effect on Nov. 1. However, Boeing moved the effective date to Oct. 2 and extended the freeze for an indefinite period after the announced termination of several programs for which it holds contracts. The cutbacks could affect about 2,500 jobs in the Defense & Space Group. Total Boeing employment stands at 158,700.
