More Between the Lines at Valley Arts Festival

In addition to Once Upon a Story, the Capistrano Valley Arts Festival includes a variety of visual and performing arts performances, exhibits and demonstrations featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople. Sponsored by the Capistrano Valley Arts Council, the events will be held at various locations in San Juan Capistrano, including the library, the Decorative Arts Study Center, Los Rios Historical District and El Adobe Plaza. Unless otherwise noted, all activities are free.

FRIDAY:

* The Coast Ballet Theatre presents a 6:30 p.m. performance in the library courtyard as part of the Once Upon a Story open house, which runs from 6 to 7 p.m.

* “Mostly Scary Stories” in the library’s La Sala Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $2 to $5.

SATURDAY:

* Dr. Irimi Vallera-Rickerson speaks on “The Residential Architecture and Furniture of Frank Lloyd Wright and Rudolph Schindler” in the library’s La Sala Room at 10 a.m. Tickets are $5 to $15. The library hosts “Black Mexico: The African Legacy,” a photographic exhibit by Tony Gleaton from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* A storytelling workshop by Sandra Leah Heidenrich will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Decorative Arts Study Center.

* Children’s Corner storytelling for youths ages 4 to 10, including simultaneous Spanish translations, runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the library’s courtyard.

* Decorative Arts Study Center hosts free tours of its current exhibit, “20th-Century Architects and Designers” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

* Live demonstrations of basketry, blacksmithing and other domestic arts and crafts will be held in the Decorative Arts Study Center courtyard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Tour guides dressed as figures from San Juan Capistrano’s early days will lead visitors through the Montanez Adobe and the O’Neil Museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Street painters will enliven El Adobe Plaza and local artists exhibit and demonstrate their works in acrylics and watercolor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mission San Juan Capistrano’s resident artist Jim Innis will lead workshops in gourd and leather painting, pen and ink sketching and calligraphy at the mission from 2 to 4 p.m.

* Face painting and art workshops for children will be offered at the Toy Factory in El Adobe Plaza from noon to 5 p.m.

* Once Upon a Story closes with a family storytelling session from 3 to 5 p.m. in the library courtyard. Tickets: $2 to $5.
