Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 10, 1991
At a time when even athletes have little knowledge of sports history, one of the best proposals for the Los Angeles Coliseum renovation is the construction of a museum outside the only stadium that has housed the Olympic Games, World Series and Super Bowl. . . .
Of course, we are still waiting for the museum that was supposed to have been built at Dodger Stadium a few years ago. . . .
I recently visited the museum in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is a delight. Winning cars and drivers’ equipment are on display, and there is a 30-minute film on the history of the 500. The admission price is only $1. . . .
A Coliseum spokesperson reports that orders for luxury boxes for the 1994 USC and Raider seasons are being taken at the rate of one a day. . . .
If the San Diego Chargers prevail Sunday at Anaheim Stadium, it will be the first time since 1979 that they will have beaten the Raiders and Rams in the same season. They also played each team in 1988, 1975 and 1970. . . .
The word is that the Rams are working on a secret weapon--the forward pass into the end zone. . . .
On the day of the NFL trading deadline, only one deal was made. The Detroit Lions sent offensive lineman Harvey Salem to the Denver Broncos for a draft choice. . . .
One reason Kansas City Royal outfielder Danny Tartabull, who is about to become eligible for free agency, may sign with the Angels or Dodgers is that he recently built a home in Malibu. . . .
Hitters who may be traded for pitchers are Mark Grace of the Chicago Cubs and Kevin McReynolds of the New York Mets. . . .
What I miss most about the end of the regular season are all those box scores. . . .
The Dodgers ought to be interested in Steve Buechele, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman who also is expected to file for free agency. . . .
This was the year when a team with one 19- and two 18-game winners, the Angels, finished seventh in the American League West and a team with three 200-hit batters, the Texas Rangers, finished third. . . .
Look-alikes: Atlanta pitcher Steve Avery and King defenseman Rob Blake. . . .
The Dodgers edged the Braves--for the title of the organization with the best overall record in the minor leagues. . . .
New Boston Red Sox Manager Butch Hobson was named minor league manager of the year by Baseball America. . . .
Thumbs up to the last-place Houston Astros for rehiring their manager, Art Howe. . . .
Rival coaches Terry Donahue and Dick Tomey will need no introduction before the UCLA-Arizona game Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Both were assistants at Kansas in 1967-70 and at UCLA in 1971-75, and Tomey was Donahue’s first defensive coordinator at UCLA in 1976. . . .
Brad Fiedel, a sophomore goaltender for UCLA, is one of 10 finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club collegiate soccer player-of-the-year award. . . .
Terrell Lowery, an outstanding guard on the Loyola Marymount basketball team, hit .299 and stole 23 bases for the Texas Rangers’ Butte, Mont., farm team in the Pioneer League. . . .
Golf belongs in the Olympic Games. . . .
Oscar de La Hoya of Los Angeles, at 132 pounds, and John Bray of Van Nuys, at 201 pounds, were named the outstanding fighters in their divisions on the All-American team selected by the USA Amateur Boxing Federation. . . .
Victor Alexander, the rookie center from Iowa State, has been impressive in the Golden State Warriors’ training camp. . . .
I don’t know whether the Kings will advance past the second round of the playoffs, but they will be the most exciting team in the NHL. . . .
The new scoreboard at the Forum got a workout Tuesday night when 41 penalties were called in the King-Edmonton Oilers game. . . .
Unfortunately, the Forum’s four video screens won’t be ready to show instant replays for another few games. The screens are smaller than I had imagined and the advertisements bigger. And some of the quizzes were difficult to read because of the color scheme. But we’ll give them time. . . .
It will be West Side Story, 1991 version, when the Sharks play the Jets of Winnipeg.
