TENNIS ROUNDUP : Becker Returns With a Victory
Second-seeded Boris Becker of Germany, playing his first tournament since the U.S. Open in August, defeated Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 6-2, 6-4, Wednesday in the second round of the Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden routed David Pate of the United States, 6-2, 6-4, in another second-round match.
Other winners were Ivan Lendl, David Wheaton and Goran Ivanisevic. Unseeded Gianluca Pozzi of Italy upset 11th-seeded Todd Woodbridge of Australia.
Top-seeded Steffi Graf reached the quarterfinals of the European Indoors at Zurich, Switzerland, with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over unseeded Andrea Strnadova.
Graf’s service and forehand were less blistering than usual, apparently because of a wrist inflammation, but she was rarely challenged by the 19-year-old Czechoslovak.
Wimbledon champion Michael Stich of Germany defeated Davis Cup colleague Carl-Uwe Steeb, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, in the first round of a $300,000 ATP men’s tournament at Berlin.
