Santa Monica : Youth Facilities Approved
The City Council approved two youth facilities Tuesday.
In one vote, the council designated a portion of the ground-floor frontage of a city parking structure for the Kids City Youth Leadership Center and appropriated $98,870 to design and build it.
Kids City is a youth empowerment program for middle- and high school-age youth. Activities include career exploration, leadership and socialization. The teen-agers will have an active role in designing their center.
The council also approved a building contract for the Santa Monica Police Activities League Center in Memorial Park, a program for at-risk youth. The PAL center will have space for basketball, theater, dances and concerts. Classrooms and computers will also be available. The program serves children ages 6 to 17.
The largest contribution to the nearly $1-million project is a $795,695 grant from the California Youth Authority.
