A 50-mile relay race to raise money for the daughter of a Ventura County firefighter who died on duty will be held Sunday at San Buenaventura Beach.

The Ventura County Professional Firefighters’ Assn. is sponsoring the first Wayne Pulley Memorial Run/50 Mile Relay. Seventeen 10-member teams from fire, police and lifeguard agencies from various parts of the state are expected to participate in the race.

Capt. Pulley, 27, of Ojai, died Aug. 21, of a heart attack while running to a fire engine in response to an alarm at Station 26 in Saticoy, said association President Ken Maffei. Pulley was the first Ventura County firefighter to die in the line of duty, Maffei said. Pulley, who joined the Fire Department in 1985, was promoted to captain in 1990.

Proceeds raised from team entry fees and donations from local businesses will be contributed to a trust fund for Pulley’s infant daughter, Kelsey Pulley.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. with each participant running a five-mile loop on the beach bike path. Refreshments will be available for spectators.
