Laguna Hills, Savanna Get No Kick From Tie
ANAHEIM — It took two missed extra-point attempts and a blocked field-goal attempt--all in the final 1 minute 39 seconds--for Laguna Hills and Savanna to play to a 20-20 tie in a nonleague football game Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
The final kicking folly came with five seconds remaining. Savanna’s Robert Quiroz lined up for a 51-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked by Greg DeFelice.
Savanna’s Tony Rios recovered a fumble at the Rebel 42 with 6:16 left in the game. Savanna’s subsequent nine-play, 58-yard drive was capped by a seven-yard scoring pass from Brad Belanger to Paul Phelan with 1:39 left. The same pair hooked up on a 15-yard scoring pass in the second quarter that gave Savanna (2-2-1) a 14-7 lead.
This time, Quiroz missed the conversion kick wide--partly because of a high snap--and Savanna led, 20-14.
Laguna Hills reached the Savanna 43 after a 54-yard kick-off return by freshman Adam Roman with 1:31 left to play. After a first down, Sergio Jimenez hauled in a 32-yard pass from quarterback Justin Vedder at the Rebel one.
Fred Kim carried it in on the next play to tie the score at 20-20 with 35 seconds left. Devon Higgins pulled his point-after attempt wide.
