ROUNDUP : Newbury Park Trips Agoura
Newbury Park High recorded its second upset in boys’ cross-country in as many weeks when the Panthers edged Agoura, 27-30, in a Marmonte League tri-meet Thursday at Peppertree Park.
The Panthers (4-0 in league meets) also thumped Royal, 15-48. Agoura beat Royal, 17-45.
Newbury Park, ranked third in the Southern Section Division III, upended defending league co-champion and Division I standout Channel Islands, 26-31, last week. Thursday’s score was a point closer but no less impressive.
Jeff Wilson of Newbury Park outsprinted Agoura’s Ryan Wilson, clocking 15 minutes 5 seconds to notch his sixth consecutive win. Emanuel Azizi of Agoura was third over the three-mile course in 15:43 and Newbury Park’s Ted Barnes (16:12) and Brent Burnett (16:26) grabbed fourth and fifth place.
Although three Newbury Park runners placed in the top five, the Panthers needed superior depth to hold off Agoura, the Southern Section’s top-ranked Division II team. All seven Newbury Park runners finished ahead of the Chargers’ fifth man.
