BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AMERICAN LEAGUE
Minnesota Manager Tom Kelly will make a few minor lineup changes tonight. He’ll move Kent Hrbek from the cleanup spot to sixth in the order, as he usually does against left-handers, and he will start Scott Leius at third base instead of Mike Pagliarulo, a left-handed hitter.
Kelly also said Jack Morris, the winning pitcher in Game 1, will start Saturday.
Jimmy Key, who will pitch for Toronto tonight, is the last left-handed starter to win an AL playoff game. He accomplished that in Game 3 of the Blue Jays’ 1989 series against Oakland, and has a 1-1 record in three playoff starts.
Key last pitched 10 days ago and decided to skip his final scheduled turn against the Twins last weekend. The wait has made him impatient, but he believes it was the right decision.
He pitched a simulated game Sunday, delivering more pitches than usual to avoid being too strong tonight. “If I am too strong,” he said, “it will be because of my intensity or the magnitude of the game.”
Angel Manager Buck Rodgers denied reports that former Milwaukee coaches Larry Haney and Andy Etchebarren, who were dismissed when Trebelhorn was fired as Brewer manager Wednesday, were candidates to join the Angels’ coaching staff. Rodgers must hire a first base coach to replace Bruce Hines and a bullpen coach to replace Frank Reberger.
