Meeting Needs of World’s Children
Although this decade began with the destruction of Iraq, as we are so frequently reminded, it also began with a very meaningful World Summit for Children last Sept. 29-30 at the United Nations.
At this one-year anniversary, I feel it is important that we focus on some of the promises made by President Bush, in our names, and by other world leaders: promises for the year 2000 of cutting child mortality by one-third of current levels; promises of universal access to clean water and appropriate sanitation; promises of halving the illiteracy rate; of providing basic education to all; of cutting moderate and severe childhood malnutrition; of halving the maternity mortality rate; and a promise of protection to children in difficult circumstances, be those war, child abuse or gang warfare.
