Literacy Council Graduates 9 Tutors of English
New graduates of the South Coast Literacy Council’s English to Speakers of Other Languages Program are Joyce Rainwater, Sharon Sacks, Mimi Scribner, Jean Telford, Dominic Trevine and Mike Vaardahl of Irvine.
Other volunteer tutors are Angela Dugan, Laguna Beach; Lillian Teachout, Laguna Niguel, and Rosemary Dillard, Lake Forest.
Supervising trainer was Betty Kent of Irvine, assisted by Paula Salot, El Toro, and Janice Donovan, Irvine.
Marilyn Ballard, Laguna Beach; Karen Wheeler, Fullerton, and Edward Hill of Orange were named $500 winners of Wet Seal competition for disabled artists. The Irvine-based women’s fashion retailer also gave $50 to Kathleen Tilton of Anaheim and Kenneth Vines of San Clemente, for honorable mention awards.
Mark Gregory of Laguna Beach, a senior at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, was awarded his Boy Scout Eagle rank. He helped refurbish C. Russell Cook Park in San Juan Capistrano with $202 raised from a carwash as his community service project. He also received his award there.
Irvine resident Olivia Herman, 16, a University High School senior, has been named a national finalist in the 1991 Young Inventors and Creators Competition sponsored by the Washington-based Foundation for a Creative America.
Her cello-piano score was selected in the classical music composition category.
National winners selected in nine categories of the arts and sciences will be announced next Saturday and flown to Washington for an honors banquet.
Olivia, who received $100 and a Library of Congress medal, has won other awards, including 1990 and 1991 gold medallions for original music composition in the Disney Creativity Challenge.
Clara Axtater celebrated her 100th birthday Friday with her son Karl, 74, and four generations of family at the Newport Beach Plaza Retirement Community.
She has been a Corona del Mar and Newport Beach resident since 1947 and is a founding member of a number of organizations, including the Harbor Democratic Club, Newport Democratic Club and the Women’s Civic League.
She was also a Hoag Hospital volunteer.
The Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa received first-place honors for its color map of the 1991 fair in the media competition at the recent International Festivals Assn. convention in Pittsburgh.
Fountain Valley resident Amanda Ryder, a 1983 Fountain Valley High School graduate who received a Rotary Club scholarship to study at Cape Town University in South Africa and later received a bachelor of arts degree at UC San Diego, has been accepted as a medical student at Dartmouth College.
Irvine resident Joan Bissell, senior lecturer at UC Irvine, was honored by the California School Board Assn.’s Hispanic Caucus for outstanding contributions to Latino education.
Bissell was cited for initiating an international program for students and teachers to exchange ideas via computer about culture and education.
The award also honored her for helping develop bilingual software to teach English to Spanish-speaking students.
Fullerton resident Helena Schwartz has been named 1991 Volunteer of the Year by Cal State Fullerton. She has been an active volunteer since 1968.
