San Marcos 44, Rio Mesa 20--Huy Trinh, a 5-foot-6 senior running back, rushed for 241 yards in 34 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the host Royals. San Marcos (2-3, 2-0) used a quick-huddle offense to keep Rio Mesa’s defense off guard. The Royals drove 85 yards in less than four minutes to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a Trinh one-yard run.
Rio Mesa’s Swanson Nunnery returned a kickoff 45 yards to the San Marcos 40 to set up a three-yard touchdown run by tailback Tony Gray seven plays later.
Nunnery caught a 20-yard touchdown pass and his 92-yard return of an interception tied the score, 20-20. However, San Marcos scored 24 consecutive points.
