A FINGER OF SPEECH
David Chute, in his otherwise excellent review of the Pogo literature (Aug. 25), falls into the same error that most everyone else does concerning the wonderful phrase about meeting the enemy and he is us.
Pogo said, as I remember, “We have met the enemy and, not only is he ours, but he is us.” Pogo deepens the significance of the phrase by alluding to the almost as famous line of Oliver Hazard Perry.
The later quote attributed to Pogo, though good, lost something in the translation.
