Princeton’s Lerch Ties NCAA Record With 370 Yards Receiving in Victory
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Mike Lerch tied an NCAA record with 370 receiving yards and caught an Ivy League-record four touchdown passes to lead unbeaten Princeton to a 59-37 victory over winless Brown on Saturday.
Lerch, who finished with nine receptions, broke the Division I-AA receiving record of 327 yards set by Rhode Island’s Brian Forster against Brown on Sept. 28, 1985, and tied the NCAA mark set by Barry Wagner of Alabama A&M; on Nov. 4, 1989, against Clark College.
Lerch scored on passes of 64, 79, 90 and 45 yards from Chad Roghair, who was 13 for 22 for 401 yards as the Tigers set Ivy League records for touchdowns and total offense in overcoming a 37-26 deficit with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Lerch’s 45-yard scoring pass from Roghair cut the deficit to 37-33 and Erick Hamilton’s 67-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers the lead for good.
