Placement of Yorkin Story Raises Ire
Peg Yorkin clearly expresses the anger and frustration felt by women who are told that they now have equality with men and who know that to be untrue.
Just the word baby added to the phrase, “You’ve come a long way” illustrates the lack of validation given to women’s concerns. As Yorkin stated, women have been acculturated to not get angry and to smile all the time, and when they don’t, they are told to lighten up.
An intelligent man who is serious, aggressive and dedicated to a cause would not be considered too intense. He would most likely be applauded and admired. These are the traits that create change, the ones that get the job done and which threaten those men who want to keep power away from women.
Yorkin’s endowment to the Feminist Empowerment Center is symbolic of women’s continuing need to have control and power in their lives if they are not to regress to where they were prior to the resurgence of the women’s movement.
