Economy Is Canada’s No. 1 Worry: Canada’s sputtering recovery is posing such serious problems for the country that it has become the No. 1 worry of the public, which fears high unemployment. A poll showed 79% of Canadians are worried about the economy, dwarfing concerns about national unity or the environment. The poll, conducted by a television network and two major newspapers, said 22% say unemployment is the country’s biggest problem, double the rate of last November. In September, the rate was 10.2%. Business profits are so low that companies are not quickly rehiring workers, economists say.
