La Canada Flintridge : Recycle Fee Hike Considered
The City Council on Monday will consider raising the annual homeowner recycling fee to fund new trash reduction efforts.
A public hearing will be held prior to the council’s final vote on the measure that would increase the annual recycling fee from $15 to $19.60. The anticipated added revenue of $160,000 to $190,000 would pay for studies into how the city can comply with state regulations calling for the volume of the city’s trash to be cut 25% by 1995 and 50% by 2000.
If the measure is adopted, it would also institute permits for private trash haulers. The city does not have its own trash collection service. Currently, trash is handled by two private firms and a third picks up recyclable materials.
The trash-hauling permits, which would be funded by the new fees, would help the trash-reduction program by allowing the city to track the volume and source of trash, City Manager Gabrielle Pryor said.
