CITY COUNCIL

NO NAME CHANGE: Decided to take no action on a proposal to change Mississippi Avenue between Beverly Glen Boulevard and Fox Hills Drive to Glenhill Way. The majority of the homeowners on the street opposed the name change.

GOOD NEIGHBORS: Approved a proposal by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter allowing residents of Culver City to participate in the Nov. 9 citywide roundup of household hazardous-waste products. The event will be held at McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Facility in Westchester. Union Oil Co. of California is helping the city pay for the event. Culver City will pay the city a fee based on the amount of waste its residents deposit.

REQUIREMENT DROPPED: Deleted a requirement that tenants in a Westwood cooperative apartment pay for widening the street at 1440 Veteran Ave. as part of a condition to convert the building to condominiums. The street widening would have cost about $600,000.

PARKING FEES: Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky introduced a proposal to reduce the amount senior citizens would pay in parking-permit fees in some residential neighborhoods. Under the proposal, annual fees for seniors would drop from $15 to $10, six-month visitor passes would be cut from $10 to $7 and the $1 charge for a one-day guest permit would be reduced to 75 cents.

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

WALK OF FAME: Approved a request to place the name of the late rock musician Jimi Hendrix along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 21 at 11:30 a.m. at 6627 Hollywood Blvd. Hendrix died of a drug overdose in 1970. He was 27.

HOW THEY VOTED

SEWER RATES: Approved raising the monthly sewer rates for homes and commercial customers. Rates for the average household will go up $1.13--from 13.50 a month to 14.63. The increase will raise an estimated $7 million this fiscal year. Passed 8-6.

Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky. Nate Holden voted no. Joel Wachs was absent.

WATER: After a 19-year legal dispute, the council approved an agreement with Inyo County that allows Los Angeles to continue pumping water from the Owens Valley. Los Angeles also agreed to help establish a fishery in the area and improve the recreational facilities. The city will also pay about $2 million annually to Inyo County. Passed 10-0.

Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Holden, Woo and Yaroslavsky. Galanter and Wachs were absent.

FENCING: Approved spending $40,000 to install fencing along bridle trails at city equestrian facilities. Passed 13-0.

LARGE TRUCKS: Asked the city attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting oversized and overweight trucks from using city streets and highways under city control. The trucks damage streets, officials say. Passed 13-0.

BILL OF RIGHTS: Approved spending $25,000 to support a Bill of Rights bicentennial gala celebration on the steps of City Hall Dec. 12. Passed 13-0.
