Firms Back Miniature PC Design: Phoenix Technologies announced that it had licensed software from Microsoft and Lotus Development as part of an effort to develop a standard design for a new class of inexpensive, lightweight IBM-compatible personal computers. With technical specifications and software purchased from Phoenix Technologies and a new “PC-on-a-chip” from Chips & Technologies, PC manufacturers will easily be able to produce 6-inch by 10-inch personal computers that weigh just up to three pounds and cost $600 to $700. The machines--expected to debut early next year--will include Microsoft’s MS-DOS software and business software applications from Lotus.
