Israel Sentences Peace Activist for Meeting With PLO
JERUSALEM — An Israeli peace activist has been sentenced to nine months in jail for meeting with PLO officials, a court official said Monday.
David Ish-Shalom, 42, also was given a suspended sentence of 12 months at a hearing Sunday, an official at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court said. The start of the jail sentence was delayed for 45 days to permit an appeal.
He was sentenced under an Israeli law that bars meetings with members of a terrorist organization, which Israel considers the Palestine Liberation Organization to be.
Earlier this month, another peace activist, Abie Nathan, was sentenced to 18 months after being convicted on similar charges.
