PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

J.D. Calsyn, Flintridge Prep--Calsyn, the Flintridge Prep quarterback, overcame wet conditions to help lead the Rebels to a 34-14 victory over defending Eight-Man Division champion Rio Hondo Prep. Calsyn completed 13 of 18 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns as the Rebels stayed unbeaten in the Prep League. Calsyn connected with San Jay Daluvoy on touchdown pass plays of 17, three and 15 yards. Calsyn passed to Jon Bowns for his fourth touchdown.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Rafik Thorossian, Glendale--Thorossian, a 6-foot, 228-pound sophomore, rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns to lead Glendale to its first victory. Thorossian scored on a 77-yard run with 47 seconds left in the first half and also had a 63-yard scoring run that gave Glendale a 34-18 lead with 9:57 left. Thorossian’s performance also opened up opportunities for tailback Bobby Webster, who gained 101 yards. “He ran like we felt he should be running the whole year,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said of Thorossian. “He’s important to us because if he and Bobby are running well, the defense can’t key on either one.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Sean Hampton--Hampton, a 5-foot-11, 201-pound running back who was an All-Western State Conference selection for Glendale College, has gained 42 yards in 14 carries this season for Utah State. Hampton, a junior, is backing up returning All-Big West Conference tailback Roger Grant. Hampton has also caught four passes for 22 yards and returned five kickoffs for 98 yards. Utah State (1-6, 1-2) plays host to Fresno State on Saturday.

MISCELLANY

Hoover cross-country runner Margarito Casillas broke a course-record at the Santa Clarita Invitational on Saturday at College of the Canyons. Casillas covered the three-mile course in 15 minutes 32 seconds, two seconds faster than the record established by David Hartman of Canyon High last year. Casillas’ victory paced the Tornadoes to their first invitational victory this season . . . The San Gabriel Valley Volleyball Club is seeking girls 18-and-under for participation in the U.S. Volleyball Assn. Junior Olympic Program. Tryouts will be held at the Ramona Convent High gym in Alhambra on the following dates: 16-and-under, Nov. 3; 18-and-under Nov. 10. Information: (213) 254-8476.
