One Dead, Two Wounded in Shootout With Police
San Diego police shot and killed one man and wounded two others Thursday evening after burglary suspects opened fire on them, police reported.
Earlier in the day police had gotten a tip that four men were planning an armed burglary that night, said homicide Lt. Dan Berglund.
Shortly before 8 p.m., police followed the suspects to 8150 Lakeport Road in Mira Mesa, a single-story home in a quiet neighborhood where children were trick-or-treating. No one was home at the time.
The four suspects got out of the car, donned masks, and went to the front of the house.
Police confronted them at the door.
“At that time, one of the suspects who was armed . . . fired at the officers and the officers returned fire, wounding three of the individuals,” Berglund said in a press conference at the scene, as children in Halloween masks milled around. None of the officers was injured.
At least two of the suspects were armed, one with a semiautomatic handgun, and another with a .357, he said.
Two of the wounded were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where one died 30 minutes later of a severe chest wound. The other is in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said, with shots to the head. Both appeared to be teen-agers, the spokesman said.
The third suspect was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with a gun wound to the hand. A hospital spokesman said the suspect, described as in his mid-20s, was in fair condition.
The fourth suspect was not wounded and was taken into custody.
Police did not know the names or ages of any of the suspects.
Berglund said three officers were involved in the shooting, but he did not know how many officers had been sent to the scene.
