NHL ROUNDUP : Flyers Extend Shark Losing Streak to 11

San Jose’s losing streak reached 11 games when Rick Tocchet scored twice to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 victory over the first-year Sharks Thursday night at Philadelphia.

The Sharks (1-13) have not won since beating the Calgary Flames in their third game of the season.

Flyer goaltender Ron Hextall won for the first time since last Feb. 24. He was 0-1-1 this season and was making his first appearance after sitting out a six-game suspension.

Hextall, playing his first game since Oct. 6, stopped 25 shots.

“I didn’t feel good, but I made the saves I had to,” he said. “I didn’t feel extremely sharp.”

Tocchet opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 11:16 of the first period.

Murray Craven’s tip-in of Dan Quinn’s wrist shot from the left point at 17:33 made it 2-0. Keith Acton made it 3-0 at 8:22 of the second period when he converted Mike Ricci’s pass from the left wing for his first goal of the season.

Link Gaetz ended Hextall’s bid for a shutout at 10:27 with his second goal of the season.

Tocchet’s second goal of the night, a tip-in of Terry Carkner’s point drive at 13:49, also came on the power play. The Flyers came into the game with the NHL’s worst power play, having scored three times in 51 advantages.

The Sharks’ David Bruce was credited with a shorthanded goal at 15:41 of the second period when his centering pass across the goalmouth was stopped by Hextall but hit Carkner’s skate and went into the net.

New York Rangers 5, Quebec 4--Tony Amonte tied the game with 4:54 left in the third period, then set up John Ogrodnick’s game-winning goal with 18 seconds left.

It was the Rangers’ fourth victory in a row and their eighth in a row over Quebec at Madison Square Garden. The Nordiques haven’t won in New York since Jan. 23, 1986.

Pittsburgh 8, Minnesota 1--Kevin Stevens and Mario Lemieux each scored two goals at Pittsburgh to lead the Penguins in a rematch of last season’s Stanley Cup final.

Stevens also had two assists and Lemieux also set up another goal as the Penguins, 0-4-1 in their last five games, ended a three-game losing streak. The North Stars have lost five of their last six games.

Chicago 4, New York Islanders 3--Steve Larmer scored his second goal of the game with 1:14 remaining to give the Blackhawks the victory at Chicago.

Larmer moved behind the Islander defense, took Michel Goulet’s quick pass from the right side and put the puck into a half-empty net behind Glenn Healy.
