PREP NOTES : Woodbridge Basketball Coach to Resign
Bill Shannon, who coached Woodbridge High School’s basketball team to the Southern Section II-A finals three of the past five seasons, announced Thursday he will resign at the end of the upcoming season.
Shannon said he plans to move to Florida with his wife, Victoria, a marketing executive with the Walt Disney Co. She has accepted a job at Disney World in Orlando.
Shannon, 36, said he is looking for another coaching job, and might continue work on a doctorate.
“I’m going to start my second childhood or midlife crisis, whatever you call it,” Shannon said. “I have a lot of options, and I’m not rushing myself.”
Shannon has coached the Warriors since the school opened in 1980. He has a 157-106 record in 10 seasons, including seven playoff appearances.
Woodbridge won the section title in 1987 and finished second to Banning in 1988 and second to Artesia last season.
Fifteen of Shannon’s players have played college basketball, including four in Division I.
“I think the success we had there is attributable to a lot of things,” he said. “I doubt if I can duplicate what’s there anyplace else. They have a great administration and great facilities there.”
