Farm Workers Demonstrate at Supermarket: Hundreds of farm workers staged a noisy protest outside a Vons supermarket in Pasadena after a judge refused to take immediate action in a battle over the use of pesticides on California table grapes. Members of Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers union came in vans from as far south as Calexico near the Mexican border expecting a ruling from Superior Court Judge Richard Montes. But at a brief hearing, Montes indicated that an appeal filed by the California Table Grape Commission blocked him from taking further action until the appeal is resolved. Chavez has targeted Vons for protests because it is the largest supermarket chain in the western United States.
