Back to Work: Musicians at London’s Royal Opera House return to work today following a pay dispute that shut the theater for two weeks. The 118 orchestra members wanted a 24% rise over two years on their average annual pay of $30,000. They settled on 5.5% with improved payments for productions broadcast live on radio. The dispute cost the Royal Opera House an estimated $500,000 a week in box-office receipts and forced cancellations of Meyerbeer’s “Les Huguenots” and performances of “Cyrano” by the Royal Ballet.
