ROME : Another Summit for Bush
President Bush returns to Europe on Wednesday for a two-day summit in Rome with the United States’ partners in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, then visits The Hague on Friday and Saturday before flying back to Washington late Saturday.
The rare NATO summit will unveil the alliance’s “strategic concept,” prepared after an 18-month review of NATO’s strategy in the wake of the disintegration of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact.
But underlying this outward purpose of the meeting will be questions about the future role of the United States in Europe’s defense, and whether the Western European nations will drift away from sole reliance on NATO.
