MORE FILLING: What’s a good, clean fuel? Orange County tried to find out in its buses and now the results from a five-year test of three alternative fuels are in. . . . And the winner is: propane--maybe. Propane-powered buses got 2 miles per gallon and operated more cheaply--at 25 cents a mile--than either methanol or compressed natural gas. But regular diesel buses are still cheaper--at 4 miles per gallon and just 15 cents a mile. Problem is, they pollute more. Which fuel should become standard? . . . “We’ll let the Environmental Protection Agency guide us on that,” says OCTD’s Joanne Curran.
