After setting Nebraska records with 294 yards rushing and six touchdowns, Calvin Jones had a botched pass play on his mind.

No. 11 Nebraska started with a 17-0 deficit but stayed on track for the Orange Bowl with a 59-23 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

“I’ve got 93 on my mind,” said Jones, who broke the Nebraska record of 285 yards by Mike Rozier and tied a Big Eight Conference record with six touchdowns for the Cornhuskers, 7-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Big Eight.

“That’s where I’m supposed to go left and attack the left end. I went right and got the right end. So that’s a zero on my grade. That’s what is on my mind right now.”

Jones, a redshirt freshman who went in for injured Derek Brown in the first half, said the magnitude of his performance hadn’t sunk in.

“I have to give credit to the other 10 guys out there,” he said. “You never get in a rhythm because they keep throwing different defenses at you. I took what they gave me.”

The Cornhuskers remained tied with No. 14 Colorado for the Big Eight lead. The Orange Bowl committee has said it will take the higher-ranked team if the league race finishes in a tie.

“As far as tackling the ballcarrier, it was our poorest performance of the year,” said Coach Glen Mason of Kansas (5-4, 2-3).

“That was just not our defense out there today. If it was, I didn’t recognize it and I hope I never see it again.”

Jones scored on carries of three, 47, nine, one, 68 and 12 yards.

Nebraska’s George Achola scored on a 31-yard run with 4:20 to play and added a 15-yard scoring run with 34 seconds remaining.

Kansas’ last lead was 20-17 at halftime on Dan Eichloff’s 21-yard field goal. But Nebraska drove 80 yards in nine plays on its first possession of the second half, with Jones scoring on the nine-yard run to take the lead for good.

Quarterback Chip Hilleary gave the Jayhawks their 17-0 lead on a 34-yard scramble with about two minutes left in the first quarter. Nebraska got its first touchdown in the second quarter on the three-yard run by Jones after an 80-yard, 15-play drive.

Hilleary’s pass was intercepted by Kenny Wilhite, Wilhite’s fifth of the season, putting the Cornhuskers at the Kansas 35. Byron Bennett kicked a 47-yard field goal, the longest of his career, to make the score 17-10 with 8:54 left in the half.
