Parker Leads UCSD Scoring Parade, Victory
UC San Diego got a goal from Cheryl Parker 1:18 into the game en route to a 5-0 victory Saturday over St. Mary’s College of Minnesota to advance to today’s championship game of the Division III Western Regional women’s soccer semifinal.
UCSD (15-2-1), ranked third nationally in the latest Division III poll, plays Cal Lutheran today at 11:30 a.m. at UCSD. Cal Lutheran (17-3), ranked 20th, scored a 3-0 upset of seventh-ranked Kalamazoo (Mich.). Kalamazoo is 15-2-1.
The winner of the UCSD-Cal Lutheran game advances to the national semifinals Nov. 16-17.
Eva Kingsbury, Karin Lindsay, Sally Weigand and Michelle Carbone also scored. Carbone and Katy Dulock handed out assists for UCSD. Triton goalie Janelle Welling had an easy afternoon as UCSD had 10 shots on goal to St. Mary’s one. UCSD led at halftime, 3-0.
St. Mary’s fell to 13-4.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
University of San Diego ended Santa Clara University’s seven-match winning streak, 15-13, 13-15, 15-12, 15-12, behind the career-high 29 kills of junior Andrea Bruns. Shannon Mutch’s 65 assists broke her own school record (62, last year against Hofstra) as USD assured itself of a .500 West Coast Conference mark and a winning record overall. Nikki Wallace had 19 kills and Jennifer Lofftus 17 for USD (17-11, 7-5). Santa Clara is 18-10, 6-4.
Gracie Schutt had 35 kills and five aces to lead San Diego State to a stunning come-from-behind victory over Utah, 14-16, 3-15, 15-4, 15-4, 18-16.
TENNIS
USD’s Jose Luis Noriega and Ignacio Martinez lost in the doubles quarterfinals of the Southern California Men’s Tennis Championships at UC Irvine, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, to UCLA’s Billy Barber and Fritz Bissell.
