Driver Fleeing 1 Accident Dies After Another
HUNTINGTON BEACH — A suspected drunk driver who police said was fleeing from the scene of a hit-and-run accident was killed late Sunday night when he ran a red light and slammed into another car.
David M. Boynton, 20, of Huntington Beach died following the 11:10 p.m. accident at Magnolia Street and Indianapolis Avenue, Police Lt. Patrick Gildea said.
Gildea said that just before the fatal collision, Boynton, a pizza parlor worker who police suspect was intoxicated, was driving his pickup truck south on Indianapolis.
He apparently had been involved in an accident a few blocks from the intersection of Indianapolis and Magnolia, Gildea said, and was trying to leave the scene before police arrived. There was no immediate information available on the earlier accident, Gildea said.
As Boynton reached the intersection, he failed to stop at a red light and ran into a car.
Two teen-agers in the car suffered minor injuries and were taken to Pacifica Community Hospital in Huntington Beach, where they were treated and released, Gildea said.
Boynton, a former Edison High School student, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he underwent emergency surgery and died a short time later. Don Boynton, his stepfather, said he did not know where David Boynton was headed and was not sure where he had been before the accident.
“He would come and go as he saw fit,” Don Boynton said.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
