Whittier : New Radios to Keep Staff Free From Interference
A new radio system will soon allow Whittier public service employees to tune out the unwelcome broadcasts of public agencies from as far away as Kern and San Diego counties. The City Council has voted to spend $107,480 to replace its public works communications system with one that would be more immune to outside interference.
The public works communications system allows city street, water and parks workers to communicate with supervisors while on assignment. The current system lacks a screening device. It must share the airwaves with the Kern County Fire Department and a San Diego County school system, along with any other agency that uses the same channel.
The council appropriation will permit the purchase and installation of 71 new radios, more than half the number needed. City staff will ask the council to replace the remainder of the outdated radios next year.
