Teen-Age Drinking
Surgeon General Antonia C. Novello addressed the rise in drinking among teen-agers in a press conference recently. There is cause for parents to have serious concern.
I stopped at a local convenience store recently, which caters to students from a middle school located nearby. On the counter was a display of liquor-filled chocolates. I asked if there truly was liquor in the candy, and the clerk replied, “Yes.” I then asked if they sold this candy to kids, and she stated, “No, they have to be 18 to buy this candy.”
Does not the law in California state that individuals must be 21 to purchase liquor? Is 18 acceptable for liquor-filled candy?
Many worthwhile organizations, which include our local Responsible Hospitality Council, are educating their group members to adhere to responsible drinking/server policies. The alcohol industry and local convenience stores should take note.
