TRUE BELIEVERS

Williams’ piece about American Jews settling on the West Bank fails to put the issue in context. Hebron, one of the cities discussed, has had Jewish residents for 3,000 years. It was only in 1929, after a pogrom by Arabs in which 70 Jews died, that the British forced the Jews to leave. Free of Jews, the local population destroyed the synagogues and the ancient Jewish Quarter.

The grandchildren of those murdered have returned to claim what is rightfully theirs. Much of downtown Hebron is owned by Jews from that period and has been resettled.

For only 19 years, from 1948 to 1967, has there been Arab sovereignty over the West Bank.
