COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Captures State Water Polo Title

Golden West won its third consecutive state water polo championship with a 9-5 victory over Grossmont Saturday at West Valley College in Saratoga. Morgan Courtney, Carlos Uchoa and Alfred Van Dorp each scored two goals, and Kevin Dillenbeck made 13 saves for the winners.

The Rustlers (33-1) were ahead, 3-2, after the first quarter, then built a 6-2 halftime advantage on goals by Uchoa, Van Dorp and Corey Delahunt.

Golden West reached the final with a 14-3 semifinal victory over College of the Sequoias earlier Saturday. Van Dorp and Courtney each scored three goals.

Courtney was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Uchoa, Van Dorp, Delahunt and Bill Nickel of Orange Coast were named to the all-tournament team.

In the seventh-place game at the state tournament:

Orange Coast 11, Merced 10 (shootout)--After the teams were tied, 10-10, the game went to a six-player, four-meter penalty-shot shootout. Orange Coast goalie Erik Terwilliger stopped the third shot, and the Pirates (27-9) scored on all six shots to earn the victory. Ken Nickel led Orange Coast with five goals, and his brother Bill Nickel added two.

In the Mt. SAC men’s basketball tournament championship game:

Fullerton 84, Mt. San Antonio 72--Bob Terry scored 25 points and Garry Hunter added 22 for Fullerton (2-0), which held Mt. SAC to 26 second-half points.

In the third-place game of the Barstow men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 71, Barstow 60--Robbie Shelton, a 6-7 freshman center from Western High, came off the bench to score 25 points and grab nine rebounds, both game highs.

Forward Sam Sabbara added 18 points and also had eight rebounds for Cypress (2-1).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

College of the Canyons 87, Rancho Santiago 77--Despite a school-record 15 three-point baskets and a game-high 25 points by Ruben Oronoz, the two-time defending state champion Dons lost at home.

Rancho Santiago (1-1) led, 51-46, at halftime, but made only nine of 29 shots (31%) in the second half. Canyons hit 16 of 25 of their second-half shots (64%).

Daryl Cole added 15 for the Dons, hitting five of eight three-pointers.

Imperial Valley 59, Orange Coast 53--Michael Wenzlaff scored 17 points and Jeffrey Porter had 15 for visiting Orange Coast (0-2). Imperial Valley is 2-0.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

San Diego Mesa 74, Orange Coast 72--Orange Coast (0-1) blew an 18-point lead in the final eight minutes of regulation. Rachelle Johnson led San Diego Mesa (1-1) with 35 points and 26 rebounds. Colleen Hatch scored 14 points and Lisa Orosco added 13 for Orange Coast.
