Dances Canceled Until Kissing Is Evaluated
ELKHORN, Wis. — Elkhorn’s schools have canceled dances until the state attorney general decides just how much slow dancing or kissing may occur before teachers must report it as sexual contact.
State law requires educators to report to authorities any sexual contact between students under 16. Walworth County has asked for a report every time students dance too close or a boy has his hand in his girlfriend’s back pocket.
Teachers in the Elkhorn district said that was going too far, but Walworth County Circuit Judge Robert Kennedy said the activities are illegal sexual contact that could be called second-degree assault.
