COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : High-Scoring Trio Leads Fullerton to Victory in Tournament Opener
Rod Summers, Garry Hunter and Bob Terry each scored more than 20 points and Fullerton College defeated San Bernardino Valley, 108-101, Wednesday in the first round of the Fullerton Tournament.
Summers scored a game-high 25 points, Hunter scored 23 points and Terry had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets (3-0).
San Bernardino Valley (0-1) cut Fullerton’s lead to 94-92 with two minutes remaining but the Hornets scored nine consecutive points on free throws, seven of which were made by Terry.
In another nonconference men’s basketball game:
Golden West 80, San Diego Mesa 71--Greg Evans scored six points in a 12-2 run over San Diego in the second half to give Golden West the lead for good. Mark Johnson scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds for Golden West (1-2). San Diego is 2-1.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Saddleback 100, MiraCosta 35--Danielle Silva and Stefanie Moorman each scored 18 points for Saddleback. After MiraCosta’s Michelle Bumbrey scored the first points of the game, Saddleback (2-0) went on a 22-2 run.
Santa Monica 68, Fullerton 67 (OT)--Santa Monica’s Danielle Hill sent the game into overtime with a basket with four seconds remaining. Hill scored 22 points for visiting Santa Monica (2-1). Hollie Keeton, a sophomore from Valencia High, scored a career-high 30 points and added 13 rebounds for the Hornets (1-1).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:
Orange Coast 3, Cypress 0--Reiko Matsumoto had 17 kills and Kit Spath had 20 assists for Orange Coast College (9-2, 14-4).
