Lockheed Reveals Building Plans: Lockheed said it will build a 300,000-square-foot office building, housing 1,300 workers, at its secret Skunk Works aircraft unit in Palmdale. The company said the building, which will be completed in 1993, is part of a previously announced decision to move its Lockheed Advanced Development Co. from Burbank. Lockheed also announced that it will leave the Skunk Works’ advanced programs operation, along with some laboratories and offices, in Burbank, having a combined area of 500,000 square feet. The company also disclosed that its Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co., headquartered in Marietta, Ga., will use a portion of the Burbank plant for “an undetermined period of time.” That apparently leaves open the possibility that Burbank will continue to have a role in the Georgia program.
