HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Coronado Scores Upset over Poway
Unseeded Coronado High School disregarded the seedings and played the kind of water polo that has earned it the past three 3-A San Diego Section titles.
The Islanders (26-4) upset top-seeded Poway, 6-2, to reach the finals Saturday. Coronado faces Monte Vista at the Jewish Community Center at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a championship doubleheader.
Poway (25-5) couldn’t get the kind of quality shots it needed. At one point in the third period, they went five minutes without shooting as Coronado stretched its halftime lead from 3-1 to 5-1.
Coronado goalie David Myers recorded 12 saves.
The Islanders got four second-half goals from Jono Johnson, and one each from Matt Humphreys and Justin Binghorn. Erik Opstad scored both of Poway’s goals.
