Graf Ousted by Novotna

NEW YORK — Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia shocked Steffi Graf in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Slims Championships on Thursday night.
Novotna’s 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory came after Martina Navratilova rallied from an awful opening set to defeat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
But where Navratilova was able to pull her game together in time, Graf, twice the winner of this season-ending tournament, failed to solve the problems presented by the ever-charging Novotna.
