Workers at a Santa Paula wrecking yard found a box filled with cremated human remains while clearing out a truck Friday morning.

“Apparently, it got lost,” said Ventura County Deputy Coroner Dale Zentis.

Officials notified relatives of the deceased, a woman who died of cancer in 1988, early Friday afternoon, Zentis said. The family lives in Ventura County.

“We were surprised because we never thought we would find something like that in a truck,” said Jose Sandoval, manager of Cal Truck at 936 Mission Rock Road.

Workers knew the gold-colored, metal box contained human remains because it had a sticker with a person’s name on it, and when she was born and died, Sandoval said.

The truck, a 1975 Ford pickup, was bought two weeks ago at a Carpinteria impound garage, Sandoval said.
