Tailback Justin Giovannettone scored on a two-point conversion run to end a California tiebreaker and give Chaminade High a 25-24 victory over host El Modena on Saturday night in a Southern Section Division III playoff game.

With the scored tied, 17-17, at the end of regulation, El Modena (9-2) began the tiebreaker from the Chaminade 10-yard line. On third down, quarterback Jose Prado threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jay Montano. Prado kicked the conversion.

Chaminade (9-2) then scored on a three-yard run by Giovannettone on third down. Chaminade sent in the kicking team for the conversion, but team captain Ted Corcoran pleaded with Coach Rich Lawson to go for two. Lawson reconsidered and Giovannettone scored the winning points.

“We were too banged up,” Lawson said. “I looked at our guys and I don’t think we could have gone another series.”

Chaminade will play host to Hart in the second round.
