Blockbuster Bidding for British Chain: Blockbuster Entertainment Corp. said it was bidding $122 million for British video rental chain Cityvision. Blockbuster said the deal would bring together the leading British and U.S. video rental chains and create a base for expansion into continental Europe. If the bid succeeds, the major Dutch industrial group Philips Electronics might take a half-share of Blockbuster’s expanded British operations. Philips would pay about $67 million for the stake or could opt instead for 6 million Blockbuster shares.
